The green field recalls the forests and the House of Braganza, while the yellow rhombus represents gold and the House of Habsburg. The blue globe shows the night sky over Rio on 15 Nov 1889 with 27 stars for the states, crossed by the motto 'Ordem e Progresso' (Order and Progress).
